Keyed Alike Locks (Gold Coast)

“Keyed alike” means you can use one key for multiple doors — where the locks are compatible. It’s a popular upgrade for homes, rentals and small businesses because it reduces key clutter and makes daily access easier.

We can often set your front door, back door, and garage access door to the same key, and sometimes side gates too (hardware-dependent). If you’re moving, it pairs perfectly with changing locks after moving.

What “Keyed Alike” Means (Plain English)

Instead of carrying multiple keys for different doors, keyed alike means the locks are configured to operate on the same key. This is usually done by rekeying multiple compatible cylinders to match one key, or by installing compatible locks and setting them up together.

One key for multiple locks

Compatible locks can be configured so a single key opens several doors.

Great for front/back access

Most commonly used to simplify front and back doors, plus garage access doors.

Often done during rekeying

We can rekey multiple locks to match, so old keys stop working and you receive a simplified key set.

Perfect time: moving day

After moving is the ideal time to reset access and make everything match (where possible).

What Can Be Keyed Alike?

Compatibility depends on the lock type, brand/keyway and cylinder. Below are common setups we see across Gold Coast homes and units.

Common “one key” setups

  • Front door + back door
  • Front/back doors + garage access door
  • Unit entry + balcony/security door (where compatible)
  • Side gate / external door (hardware-dependent)

If your locks aren’t compatible, we can quote on options to change locks to a matching system.

When it may not be possible

  • Different brands/keyways that can’t be matched
  • Worn or damaged cylinders that should be replaced
  • Some specialty locks that don’t support rekeying
  • Body corporate / restricted systems needing authorisation

For strata and restricted systems, see commercial locksmith.

Keyed Alike vs Master Key Systems

These are different solutions. “Keyed alike” is about convenience (one key for multiple doors). A master key system is about access levels (a master key that opens everything, plus individual keys for selected doors).

Keyed alike

One key opens multiple doors. Best for homes, small offices, and simple access needs.

Master key systems

Different access levels for staff/tenants. Best for businesses, body corporates and multi-door sites.

Quick answers about making your doors work on one key.

What does keyed alike mean?

Not always. Locks must be compatible (same brand/keyway or suitable cylinder type). We can assess what you have and advise the best option.

Is keyed alike the same as rekeying?

Rekeying changes a lock to work with a new key. Keyed alike is rekeying multiple compatible locks to the same key so you carry fewer keys.

Yes. After moving is the ideal time to reset access and simplify your key set. See change locks after moving.
