Lock rekeying · Gold Coast

Keep the hardware. Reset the keys. Take control of access again.

Rekeying changes the keying inside a compatible lock so the old keys no longer operate it, while the existing exterior hardware stays in place. It is a practical way to reset access after moving, lost keys or a change in authorised occupants.

Imperial Locksmiths provides mobile rekeying across the Gold Coast for homes, rentals, businesses and managed properties. We assess whether the locks are suitable first; if they are worn, damaged or not compatible, we can explain replacement options or a suitable keyed-alike plan.

Rekey locks Gold Coast

Access changes. The hardware does not always have to.

Rekeying is a key-control service, not a full hardware replacement. It makes sense when the lock is suitable to retain and the goal is to change who can use the keys.

01

Lock suitability check

Assess the type, condition and compatibility of the existing locks before planning the rekey.

02

Rekey compatible locks

Update the keying for suitable locks so previous keys no longer operate the selected doors.

03

Issue new keys

Provide new keys for the revised arrangement and explain which doors are included.

04

Match selected locks

Where compatible, set multiple selected locks to operate on one practical matching key.

Key control reset

Rekeying changes who can use the lock. It does not mean replacing the entire door hardware.

It can be a cost-effective option for sound compatible locks, but it is not the right answer for every door. If hardware is damaged, unreliable or no longer fits the property’s needs, full replacement may be more dependable.

Rekey-lock FAQs

A practical security reset when the locks are still worth keeping.

Let us know how many doors you want included and why access is changing. For rentals or managed properties, tell us who can authorise the work.

What does it mean to rekey a lock?

Rekeying changes the keying inside a compatible lock so existing keys no longer operate it, while the existing exterior hardware remains in place. New keys are supplied for the updated lock.

Can every lock be rekeyed?

Many standard locks can be rekeyed, but suitability depends on the lock type, condition and compatible parts. Worn, damaged, uncommon or unsuitable locks may be better replaced.

Is rekeying cheaper than changing locks?

It can be, because rekeying retains existing compatible hardware. The best option depends on the condition of the locks and whether a hardware or security upgrade is needed.

When should I rekey my locks?

Common reasons include moving into a property, lost or unreturned keys, changes in authorised occupants or staff, and a general need to reset key control.

Can multiple locks be set to one key?

Often, if the locks are compatible. This is called keyed alike and lets a matching key operate multiple selected locks.
